Ozonator For Swimming Pools

Ozonator For Swimming Pools

An ozonator is an electro-mechanical device that generates ozone gas and injects it into your pool water. Ozone is a powerful oxidizer that supports traditional pool and spa sanitizers like chlorine.

Ozone is generated by corona discharge (CD) or ultraviolet lamps and then injected into your pool using venturi injection. Ozone does not build up a residual in the water like free chlorine.

How It Works

Ozonators use powerful oxidisers, like ozone, to produce chlorine-free, clearer, safer and more hygienic swimming pool water. Ozone is nature’s most potent sanitiser. It destroys viruses and bacteria and can even kill chlorine-resistant germs such as giardia and cryptosporidium.

A small ozonator unit generates ozone gas, which is then injected into your pool water circulation system. The ozone is a powerful oxidiser that quickly converts back to oxygen by the time the water returns to your pool, leaving you with noticeably softer and safer swimming pool water.

Some ozone systems use corona discharge technology, which uses high-voltage electrical discharges to create ozone, while others use UV lamps. In either case, ozone is generated in a chamber with a dielectric that breaks apart oxygen molecules into its components. The ozone then sanitises your pool water by contacting the surfaces of its cells.

While ozone eliminates chlorine-resistant germs and reduces chloramines, it cannot replace your regular sanitiser. Usually, you will still need to maintain a chlorine residual of 0.5ppm or lower. But ozone will cut your chlorine costs by eliminating unnecessary chlorine additions and by reducing the frequency of weekly non-chlorine shock treatments.

Installation

Ozonators, or ozone generators, are installed in the swimming pool’s circulation system downstream of the operating equipment. As the water passes through the ozonator, the oxygen it creates sanitizes the water as it travels back to the pool. However, because ozone is unsafe for human contact in large concentrations, the ozone depletes quickly. This is why it’s important that the ozone is used up completely before the water returns to swimmers.

Most ozone systems use one of two generator types; corona discharge or ultraviolet light. Both generators work by using high voltage electrical discharges to create ozone. When air passes over these devices, the energy splits the oxygen molecules, causing them to reassemble into ozone molecules. Ozone is then dissolved into the water by the injection device attached to the ozonator.

Once in the water, ozone ozonator for swimming pool becomes a very strong oxidizer. It attacks and kills bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants. Since ozone does not maintain a residual disinfectant, it must be combined with chlorine or other chemical sanitizers in order to achieve complete sanitation.

When ozone is used as the primary sanitizer, the pool owner should still add in a mineral sanitizer and algaecides to reduce chlorine usage. It’s also a good idea to add an occasional non-chlorine shock treatment to the water. In addition, a booster pump is recommended to improve circulation, which will help maximize the ozone’s oxidizing effects.

Maintenance

Ozone is an oxidizer, which breaks down and destroys organic contaminants, reducing the need for other chemicals to sanitize your pool water. It also destroys chlorine-resistant bacteria, such as giardia and cryptosporidium, as well as viruses and amoebas.

A pool ozone generator uses high-voltage electrical discharges or ultraviolet (UV) light to generate ozone. The UV process passes air over UV lamps, which splits oxygen molecules into atoms that reassemble to form ozone. The ozone is then injected into the pool through a venturi injection device that draws it into the water using a pressure vacuum.

The ozone is not permanent in your pool water, and it will revert back to oxygen within about 24 hours. Therefore, ozone is not recognized by most state and local governments as a stand-alone pool sanitizer, and the use of an ozonator is not recommended without the support of an additional pool sanitizer, such as chlorine.

The ozone is very effective, but it is not a replacement for other sanitizers. An ozone system will still require a back-up sanitizer such as chlorine or bromine, and the pool water must be properly balanced with regard to pH and total alkalinity. In addition, the venturi injector must be free of buildup from calcium and other materials that could clog the device. A pool professional may recommend a periodic cleaning of the injector and tubing with vinegar or muriatic acid to ensure proper operation.

Safety

Ozone is a powerful oxidizer that can destroy viruses, bacteria, organic contamination and chemical byproduct build ups. It is not a complete sanitizer on its own, but it can reduce the need for chlorine, or other backup chemicals.

Most ozonators (also called Ozone Generators) ozonator for swimming pool work by passing air over a UV light source, which converts oxygen into ozone. The ozone is then dispersed into the water via the pool plumbing system. This is the same process that keeps European drinking and swimming pools clean and fresh, and which has become increasingly popular here in the United States.

These units produce much more ozone than traditional systems, and can quickly disinfect your pool and make it safe for swimming. However, there are still safety measures you must take to protect your family from exposure. For instance, you will need a pool professional who is experienced with these systems and can monitor them properly.

To further improve your pool sanitation and water clarity, we recommend adding The Pool Circulator. This replacement return jet fitting dramatically improves circulation by creating a spiraling flow. This will help the ozone disperse more effectively and reach the whole pool, to assure proper disinfection. We also recommend the WaterLink SpinTouch Labs, the ultimate water testing system that performs up to 10 different water factors in just 1 minute.
