Tinplate Sheet
Tinplate Sheet consists of steel coated with a thin layer of tin. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, solderability and malleability.
In addition to those tests stipulated in tinplate specifications, it is customary for manufacturers and users of tinplate to carry out several other tests. These include cupping and alternating bend tests.
Corrosion Resistance
The corrosion resistance of tinplate is due to the presence of a thin layer of metal tin that protects the steel (or in earlier times, the wrought iron) backing. Tinplate can be used for packaging foodstuffs and beverages, oils, greases, paints, polishes, chemicals, aerosol containers and caps, and many other products. It has the strength, formability and nontoxic properties of steel with the addition of a beautiful metallic luster.
In addition to tin, which is highly corrosion resistant, the tinplate can also contain other metals, such as lead or zinc, and these can help prevent corrosion by providing a protective coating on the steel. A major application for tinplate is the production of food cans, and it Tinplate Sheet is still an important industry despite several technological innovations. These include replacing wrought iron with steel for the black plate in about 1880; the invention of continuous cold reduction in 1927, which eliminated hot-pack rolling; and the introduction of continuous electro-tinning on a commercial scale, which replaced the old hot-dipping process.
The tinplate is plated with commercially pure tin using an electrolytic process in which the strip passes through tanks containing tin anodes on both sides of the metal, immersed in an electrolyte solution. The quantity of tin deposited on each side of the strip is controlled by varying the current setting on one or both anodes. The tin plating is then either dull or bright as required for the can to which it is to be filled.
Solderability
Tinplate is a thin steel sheet coated by tin. It combines the strength of steel with corrosion resistance and solderability of tin. It is used for all types of food cans, beverage cans, and 18-liter cans. It also has excellent properties in terms of weldability and printability.
The manufacture of tinplate is subject to stringent quality control measures. This is particularly important for the chemical composition of the steel, minimization of inclusions and the quality of the tin coating. In addition to these quality controls, the forming process must be controlled for proper tempering and the presence of air bubbles in the coating. This is especially critical since the tinplate fabrication processes such as side seaming and end flanging depend on bending and folding the plate both parallel to and transverse to the rolling direction.
There are several tests which may be applied to evaluate the solderability of tinplate. The most basic is the water break test in which a sample of the material is momentarily dipped in a water bath and examined for areas of retained water. The more quantitative tests include the Erichsen test and the Jenkins bend test. In the Erichsen test a 76 mm diameter blank is clamped between an annular ring (blankholder) and a punch; the punch is advanced against the specimen mechanically or hydraulically to produce a depression or “cup”. The depth of the cup at which fracture occurs is recorded as the Erichsen value.
Weldability
The tin layer on a tinplate has a beautiful metallic luster and excellent properties in corrosion resistance, solderability and weldability. It is suitable for a wide range of applications including food, beverages and other metal containers. It also has good forming characteristics and can be formed into a wide variety of shapes.
Since the tin mass is present discontinuously above the Stainless Hardened SteelStrip plate-shaped tin plating layer, there are differences in tin layer thickness from sheet to sheet. For this reason, it is difficult to achieve uniform welding when the tin plate is used for producing welded cans. When a welding current is applied to the overlap seam during roller seam welding, the changing electrical resistance of the tin mass due to the difference in tin layer thickness can cause cold welds.
According to the present invention, there is disclosed a tin plate for a welded can having a tin plating adhesion amount that does not change substantially from one side of the steel sheet to another and having excellent paint and film adhesion, tin peeling resistance and weldability as well as corrosion resistance (filament rust resistance and tin coating corrosion resistance). It is possible to produce such a tin plate by performing chemical conversion treatment on a raw material containing carbon and other elements. It is also possible to form such a tin plate with a temper grade that meets the requirements of forming, such as for making a welded can body and end.
Printability
Tinplate is a low carbon steel coated with tin, which provides the strength of steel and noncorrosive properties of tin. It also has excellent weldability and solderability, making it the ideal material for constructing metal containers for food, beverages, paints, and other consumer products. Tinplate also has a beautiful metallic luster and is nontoxic.
Printed tinplate sheets are an essential packaging solution for numerous industries, including beverage, food, and chemical manufacturers. The printability of these sheets allows for vibrant and detailed branding, which elevates product visibility and marketability. Printed tinplate is also used in various promotional materials and signage applications.
The production of tinplate requires only 97% less energy than that of virgin (unrecycled) steel cans, which means that it is an environmentally friendly choice for packaging. Moreover, tinplate can be recycled repeatedly without losing its strength.
When ordering tinplate, it is important to consult with your manufacturer to make sure that the material will meet your specific needs. You should also be aware of the manufacturing techniques that will be used to fabricate your containers. Moreover, you should consider whether you need cut or coil sheet tinplate. These sheets are available in both forms, and the selection will depend on your end-use and fabrication technique. You should also choose tinplate that is free from impurities and has high corrosion resistance.
